Marshall vs. Appalachian State Pick: Tease the Favorite and the Under
By Ben Heisler
Primetime NFL games so far have been, for the most part, terrific. Overs have hit in all six games, and four of them have been highly competitive decided by one score of less.
Tonight, however, may be a different story.
If Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers as eight-point road favorites against rookie Davis Mills and the Houston Texans isn't for you, there is a college football standalone alternative that could be a very compelling matchup.
Appalachian State hosts Marshall from Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C. as seven-point home favorites after opening consensus at -5.5. The total currently sits at 59, having moved up from the consensus line of 56.5 earlier in the week.
How to bet Marshall at Appalachian State
Rather than take either of those numbers to stand alone, I'm going to consider a same-game two-way teaser at 6.5 points.
For anyone unfamiliar with teaser bets, sportsbooks such as WynnBET allow bettors to "tease" the spread or total in whatever direction they want. If you want to tease Marshall as a seven-point underdog by six-point, you can move the line from +7 to +13. Teasers at WynnBET can be made in six, 6.5, or seven-point increments, making the odds higher as you grab another half of a point.
I like Appalachian State to win with their leadership at quarterback in Senior Chase Bryce. He's completed just under 70% of his passes and helped the offense remain steady along with the explosiveness of Junior running back Camerun Peoples. Peoples has five touchdowns through three games while averaging nearly 6.5 yards per carry. I mean, he has "RUN" in his name, so you know he's a baller.
Marshall's a tough out, however. Its offense is top 10 in FBS so far this year and running back Rasheen Ali is tied for the lead in college football with eight touchdowns through three games. The eye-opening numbers for Marshall on that side of the ball is likely a factor behind public support betting this total up to 59.
By teasing the Mountaineers along with the under, I can now get Appalachian State at -0.5 rather than worry if they'll cover a full touchdown against a solid Marshall team. I also get to move the already bet-up total an additional 6.5 points higher to 65.5.
