Mid-Week Movement: Packers Bigger Favorites vs. Lions, Cardinals Losing Ground vs. Vikings
By Peter Dewey
Every week in the NFL, oddsmakers will take more bets on a certain team in a matchup that can cause the line to move throughout the week.
On top of the amount of money coming in, injuries, weather and other game-specific factors can also move lines ahead of Sunday’s slate.
This week, there are two games that have seen their lines change since they opened, as the Green Bay Packers are now 11-point favorites on WynnBET against the Detroit Lions and the Arizona Cardinals have dropped to just 3.5-point favorites against the Minnesota Vikings.
There was also a drastic shift in the total in Thursday night’s game between the Washington Football Team and the New York Giants which we covered here.
First, let’s take a look at the change in the Packers-Lions matchup:
Packers vs. Lions Odds for Monday Night Football NFL Week 2
Spread:
Packers: -11.0 (-110)
Lions: +11.0 (-110)
Moneyline:
Packers: -550
Lions: +410
Total: 48.0 (Over -110/Under -110)
The Packers opened as 10.5-point favorites despite their 38-3 loss in Week 1, and it appears that the public is loving Green Bay, as the line is now up to 11. Last week, there wasn’t a single double-digit spread on the slate, but three of the four teams that were touchdown or more favorites failed to cover, as underdogs were 12-4 against the spread.
Oddsmakers are giving a little more of an incentive to take the Lions, who did cover the 9.5-point spread against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, but Aaron Rodgers’ success against Detroit in his career may warrant a longer wait to see if you can grab another point or two before siding with Detroit.
Rodgers is 17-5 against the Lions in his career and 10-2 at home.
Vikings vs. Cardinals Odds for NFL Week 2
Spread:
Vikings: +3.5 (-110)
Cardinals: -3.5 (-110)
Moneyline:
Vikings: +170
Cardinals: -200
Total: 51.0 (Over -110/Under -110)
This line has moved a ton since opening with the Cardinals as four-point home favorites.
Arizona was up to a 4.5-point favorite on Tuesday, but the line has moved back down. Considering it is still over that magic number of three, taking the Vikings to cover isn’t the worst idea in the world, especially considering the Cardinals are just 2-5 against the spread as home favorites since Kliff Kingsbury took over in 2019.
