NFL Power Rankings Based on Super Bowl Odds Ahead of Week 8
By Peter Dewey
If I told you months ago that the Cincinnati Bengals would be the No. 1 seed in the AFC through seven weeks, you probably would have laughed in my face.
But here we are.
Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and company upset the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore to improve to 5-2 on the season and take over the AFC's No. 1 seed. They are 5-2 along with the, you guessed it, Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans. Yeah, this is getting a little wild.
While there is plenty of parity in the AFC, the NFC's top teams all won this past week as the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers remain atop the conference.
Every week this season, yours truly ranks each NFL team in relation to their Super Bowl odds at WynnBET Sportsbook in BetSided's NFL Power Rankings. If you’re looking for last week’s rankings to see where everyone moved to, you can find it here.
So, let's see how this week's slate shuffled the field ahead of Week 8:
1. Arizona Cardinals (7-0, +800) Last Week: No. 1
The Cardinals did what they were supposed to do and blew out Davis Mills and the Houston Texans 31-5 on Sunday. Arizona hasn't had the toughest schedule so far, and it may get a reality check against the Green Bay Packers on a short week. Still, the undefeated Cardinals deserve the No. 1 spot for the second straight week.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-1, +500) LW: No. 2
For the first time in a while, the top teams are staying the same this week. Tom Brady dismantled the Chicago Bears in Week 7, and the Tampa Bay defense made sure Justin Fields never says the NFL is "slow" for him again. The defending champs get a division clash with the Saints next.
3. Los Angeles Rams (6-1, +750) LW: No. 3
Matthew Stafford and company survived his return to Detroit despite Dan Campbell pulling out every, and I mean every, trick play in the book. Stafford and Cooper Kupp have dominated opposing defenses, and the Rams are double-digit favorites against the Texans in Week 8.
4. Green Bay Packers (6-1, +1100) LW: No. 5
Four straight AFC teams for the first time all season? That's right. Aaron Rodgers was great once again on Sunday, and he has a chance to cement the Packers atop the NFC, and himself atop the MVP standings if Green Bay can beat Arizona in Week 8. The Pack could be without Davante Adams (COVID-19), which makes things tougher on Rodgers.
5. Buffalo Bills (4-2, +550) LW: No. 6
Buffalo had a bye in Week 7, but it gets a small bump up the rankings here. Josh Allen and company have an easy path to a division title, and the Ravens' loss to Cincinnati just made the AFC's No. 1 seed even easier to attain.
6. Dallas Cowboys (5-1, +900) LW: No. 7
Dallas was also on a bye, but the only undefeated team against the spread this season deserves a little love. The NFC East is a dumpster fire, and Dallas will get Kirk Cousins in primetime (sorry, Minnesota Vikings fans) in Week 8 with a chance to build on its division lead.
7. Cincinnati Bengals (5-2, +5000) LW: No. 12
Is this an overreaction? Maybe. Have the Bengals been impressive as hell this season? 100 percent. Joe Burrow is a star in the making and Ja'Marr Chase is trying to lock up the Rookie of the Year award before the halfway mark of the season. Cincy had a bad loss to Chicago, but it's only other defeat came in overtime against the Packers. The Bengals are for real.
8. Tennessee Titans (5-2, +1800) LW: No. 10
The Titans have beaten the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs in consecutive weeks. The team that lost to the New York Jets seems to have gone by the wayside and a new and improve Titans squad has replaced it. The AFC South is tightening, but Tennessee is in the driver's seat.
9. Baltimore Ravens (5-2, +1200) LW: No. 4
It was an ugly loss to the Bengals this week, but Lamar Jackson and company are still in the conversation for the AFC's top seed. The bye week comes at the right time for Baltimore.
10. Las Vegas Raiders (5-2, +4000) LW: No. 11
Even without Darren Waller the Raiders dismantled a weak Philadelphia Eagles team in Week 7. Derek Carr may not win MVP but he's certainly in the conversation if the Raiders hold on in the AFC West. With the Chiefs looking more and more mortal each week, it's not as crazy as it seemed in the beginning of the year.
11. Los Angeles Chargers (4-2, +1400) LW: No. 9
The Chargers lose some ground on the bye week because of Tennessee and Cincinnati picking up impressive wins. However, they should be glad they gained a half game on Kansas City this week.
12. New Orleans Saints (4-2, +4000) LW: No. 13
It wasn't easy, but the Saints were able to beat the Seahawks on Monday night to improve to 4-2 on the season. New Orleans has left a lot to be desired through six games, but with the NFC West having only two real contenders, the Saints have a path to playoff spot at the moment.
13. Cleveland Browns (4-3, +2000) LW: No. 14
Case Keenum defeated his former team in Denver in Week 7, and the Browns got a much-needed win without Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Chubb may be back for a crucial Week 8 matchup with the Steelers.
14. Kansas City Chiefs (3-4, +1600) LW: No. 8
The Chiefs look really, really bad on both sides of the ball right now, but they get the benefit of the doubt at No. 14 because they have Patrick Mahomes. I'm not sure if the problems on defense are fixable, but K.C. is in danger of missing the playoffs if things don't change soon.
15. Indianapolis Colts (3-4, +7500) LW: No. 21
Frank Reich's team braved the elements on Sunday night to win its third game in four outings. Reich is now 23-12 as a head coach in games Week 6 or later, and the Colts are trending up with the Titans up next.
16. Minnesota Vikings (3-3, +7500) LW: No. 15
The Vikings drop one spot on their bye week, but they have a chance to really make a move against Dallas in Week 8.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3, +10000) LW: No. 16
I'm not sold on Pittsburgh yet this year, but if the defense continues to play well the Steelers are going to compete for a playoff spot. Ben Roethlisberger got a much-needed week off after getting dinged up the first six weeks.
18. New England Patriots (3-4, +10000) LW: No. 22
The Patriots have beaten the Jets twice and the Texans once. Mac Jones has looked better than any other rookie quarterback (not saying much) but the Pats are in the conversation for a wild card spot in the AFC.
19. Atlanta Falcons (3-3, +50000) LW: No. 25
The Falcons are now 3-3 after a last-second win over the Dolphins. As much as the Kyle Pitts pick seemed strange for a team that was almost certainly ready to rebuild, the rookie has come one strong the past two weeks.
20. Seattle Seahawks (2-5, +12500) LW: No. 23
I'll give the Seahawks credit, they've fought (and covered) in back-to-back games with Geno Smith under center. Unfortunately, covering the spread doesn't mean you get a playoff spot, and at 2-5 Seattle's chances are slipping away with Russell Wilson on injured reserve.
21. Denver Broncos (3-4 , +15000) LW: No. 20
Teddy Bridgewater covers the spread and that's about it these days. Denver has lost four consecutive games and couldn't muster anything offensively against the Browns in Week 7. At this point the Broncos might as well play Drew Lock.
22. San Francisco 49ers (2-4, +6000) LW: No. 17
Kyle Shanahan may start Trey Lance, or he may not, but the 49ers aren't going anywhere this year if they play like they did on Sunday. San Francisco has now lost four straight games.
23. Chicago Bears (3-4, +50000) LW: No. 18
Justin Fields looked overmatched against the Buccaneers in Week 7. It's not entirely his fault, but the Bears are going to have more growing pains as they try to bring him along this season.
24. Carolina Panthers (3-4, +25000) LW: No. 19
The Sam Darnold experience has been fun, huh? The Panthers benched Darnold in the loss to the Giants and look lost right now without Christian McCaffrey. This is a roster that actually warrants a trade for Deshaun Watson to stop wasting some of the talent on both sides of the ball.
25. New York Giants (2-5, +100000) LW: No. 28
The Giants' defense stepped up in a big way against the Panthers to pick up a win in Week 7. If some of the offensive weapons could get healthy the Giants may win some more games, but they have a brutal stretch with Kansas City, Las Vegas and Tampa Bay coming up in their next three games.
26. Washington Football Team (2-5, +25000) LW: No. 26
I didn't expect Washington to beat the Packers, but the Football Team isn't going to get a boost up these rankings for hanging around. This is looking like a lost season for Ron Rivera's squad.
27. Philadelphia Eagles (2-5, +50000) LW: No. 24
The Eagles continue to struggle and they lost Miles Sanders to an ankle injury in Week 7. Jalen Hurts hasn't looked great outside of garbage time, and the Eagles look like they are headed for the basement in the NFC East.
28. Miami Dolphins (1-6, +50000) LW: No. 31
Tua Tagovailoa has the fourth-best PFF grade among quarterbacks since returning to the lineup and yet the Dolphins are 1-6. Maybe , just maybe, the whole team is just bad. I'm not sure if Deshaun Watson could completely fix this roster.
29. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-5, +200000) LW: No. 29
The Jags didn't lose this week thanks to the bye, and they'll have a chance to upset the Geno Smith-led Seahawks in Week 8.
30. Houston Texans (1-6, +200000) LW: No. 30
The Texans are still really, really bad, but they will get Tyrod Taylor back at quarterback which could spark the offense. Now all the team needs to do is trade Deshaun Watson for something valuable to jumpstart this rebuild.
31. New York Jets (1-5, +200000) LW: No. 27
Zach Wilson is out two-to-four weeks with a PCL injury and the Jets gave up 54 points to the Patriots in Week 7. It almost can't get worse.
32. Detroit Lions (0-7, +200000) LW: No. 32
Dan Campbell tried every trick play he could find, but he should've tried tricking the Rams into taking Jared Goff back. Goff's pick in the end zone sealed the Lions' fate as they remain winless on the year.
