Thanksgiving Day Betting Trends
As our very own Ben Heisler wrote about earlier this week, favorites have absolutely dominated on Thanksgiving Day in recent years.
Dating back to 2005, betting favorites have gone 32-14 against the spread. That's a cover rate of 70%. If you want to follow that trend today, you're going to want to bet on the Bears (-3), Cowboys (7.5), and the Bills (-6).
Bears vs. Lions Odds, Prediction, and Betting Information
- Time of kickoff: 12:30pm EST
- Line: Lions +3
- Total: 41.5
Iain MacMillan wrote about his best bet for the game in his Bears vs. Lions betting preview:
"It's no secret that the Bears and Lions have two of the worst offenses in the NFL. The Bears rank 31st in yards per play, and the Lions are only slightly better, ranking 28th in that statistics. With those in mind, you may think that the UNDER is an obvious play, but before you lock in that bet, consider each teams defenses as well."
"The Lions rank 29th in opponent yards per play, and while you might assume that the Bears defense is a dominant unit, that's not necessarily true. They rank 14th in opponent yards per play, 25th in opponent yards per rush attempt, and 15th in opponent yards per carry."
"If sportsbooks are going to set a total at the low mark of 41.5, both defenses better be among the best in the NFL. That's not the case here, so I'm going to back the OVER in this Thanksgiving Day matchup."
Pick: OVER 41.5
Raiders vs. Cowboys Odds, Prediction, and Betting Information
- Time of kickoff: 4:30pm EST
- Line: Cowboys -7.5
- Total: 51
Ben Heisler wrote about his best bet for Raiders vs. Cowboys in his betting preview:
Even if the Raiders offense wakes up with Derek Carr at the helm, they've still been outscored 96-43 since the bye. The Cowboys will all their playmakers through the air and the ground face a Vegas defense that's fallen all the way back to 25th in the NFL in points allowed, and are bottom 4 in run defense.
Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard should eat, making the absence of Cooper and perhaps Lamb somewhat insignificant.
I'll buy on the public play and eat Turkey with the common people, but get in early before this one moves up.
Pick: COWBOYS -7.5
Bills vs. Saints Odds, Prediction, and Betting Information
- Time of kickoff: 8:20pm EST
- Line: Saints +6.5
- Total: 45
Reed Wallach wrote about his best bet for Bills vs. Saints in his betting preview:
Buffalo's market sentiment has never been lower this season, losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars as a big road favorite and the Colts as a touchdown chalk at home in two of the past three weeks.
Meanwhile the Saints lost a game as a big home favorite to the Falcons, lost a tight one to the Titans, and were never that close with an emerging Eagles team.
My favorite play is on to be on the under. The Saints defense remains is inside the top six in EPA/Play and the Bills should have no issue with a Trevor Siemian-led New Orleans offense. Buffalo issecondin EPA/Play.
The Bills have quietly been an under team lately, going under the total in three of their last four, and on a short week I can see a low scoring affair once again.
Pick: UNDER 45
