For the 30th time, the British Open Championship will be played at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

We've got an incredible field for the last major of 2022, and you can check out my preview, top picks, dark horse bets, and more with BetSided's coverage throughout the week.

Given the unique nature of links golf and the Old Course, it's important to look back at past events here to see what can be learned heading into the 150th Open.

Lessons From Past Majors at St. Andrews

Golf legends like Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus have all won The Open at St. Andrews, though Zach Johnson was the most recent winner here back in 2015.

High winds are always possible, but Brian Giuffra's weather report indicates conditions should be favorable.

The Old Course at St. Andrews is a long 7,536-yard Par 72 links-style course with wide fairways and challenging rough. Bunkers are placed strategically, so a strong sand game will be critical as well as an ability to effectively scramble if golfers find themselves in the thick stuff.

Length off-the-tee is critical and experience with links-style golf and high winds are a bonus. Strong around-the-green play is also important, though exceptional iron play can help mitigate that necessity.

Greens here are typically slower and flatter, so golfers who struggle with the putter should find things easier this week.

All-in-all, the Old Course at St. Andrews rewards great drivers who can scramble and aren't intimidated by deep bunkers or tall rough. It'll take a warrior to become a major champion here, but that'll just set up for a sensational several days of television.
