These NFL playoffs aren’t short on storied franchises looking to make it back to the Super Bowl. The San Francisco 49ers, who have been to the Super Bowl twice in the last decade, will look to add a Lombardi Trophy to their trophy case in less than a month. They just might be able to do it.

When Was the 49ers’ Last Super Bowl Win?

The San Francisco 49ers won five Super Bowl titles between 1982 and 1995, led by Hall of Famers like Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice. They were an unstoppable force, winning one Super Bowl over the Buffalo Bills in dominating 52-17 fashion. Five years later, they won in lopsided fashion again, 42-26.

They made the Super Bowl again in 2013, this time with another strong defense and with Collin Kaepernick at quarterback. It was a dramatic match with the Baltimore Ravens, including a power outage in the New Orleans Superdome. The game saw two brothers coach against each other, with Jim and John Harbaugh manning each sideline. The 49ers would lose a high-scoring game 34-31.

In 2020, the 49ers would make it back to the Super Bowl, going against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a tight game until the Chiefs pulled away late, with most people remembering that game for the missed deep shot that Jimmy Garoppolo took to an open Emmanuel Sanders with 1:40 left in the game trailing 24-20. It should have been a touchdown to put them ahead late.

San Francisco 49ers’ Odds to Win Super Bowl 56

The 49ers are the Cinderella story of these playoffs. They snuck in as a Wild Card out of the NFC West, they beat the Dallas Cowboys on the road as underdogs, and they have a roster that’s capable of making some noise. Their diverse and varied run game is electric with Elijah Mitchell and Deebo Samuel, and their defense is playing about as good as anyone left.

The Cowboys were the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL this year, and the 49ers defense, on the road, held them to seven points through the first three quarters, and gave up a total of 77 yards and only 230 passing to Dak Prescott and company. This 49ers team is an underdog at +1200 odds at WynnBET, the second-longest odds of any team remaining, but they have a roster that can compete.
