This one wasn’t too big of a shock since it was announced early on Thursday. But now it’s official: the Kansas City Chiefs have made Eric Fisher the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Fisher’s selection by the Chiefs may not come as a surprise, and teams may have known about it for some time but it still causes some chaos at the top of the draft.

Many people thought that Luke Joeckel’s experience in the SEC was going to get him the pick over Fisher, who came from a much smaller conference and faced far less competitive opponents. But the Chiefs met with both players numerous times over the last month and have come to the conclusion that Fisher is the guy they want blocking for Alex Smith moving forward.

Fisher will come to the Chiefs and likely play right tackle if the team can’t trade Branden Albert, which is something they’ve been trying to do for some time now. The Dolphins are the only trade partner at the moment, but all trade talks have been shelved until the two teams make their first round selection.

Obviously, the pick is going to inspire controversy and debate as most draft pundits were convinced that Joeckel was the guy to take. But beyond that the shakeup in the top of the draft and the ramifications of the pick have yet to be felt. Teams like the Miami Dolphins may now attempt to trade up to take Joeckel now that he’s slipped passed the first pick.
