The Memphis Grizzlies were the surprise of the postseason as they’ve found themselves in the Western Conference Finals and a series away from their first ever trip to the NBA Finals. But the trip through the playoffs may be short lived if Memphis can’t turn things around and stop getting blown out by the San Antonio Spurs.

Game 1 was a laugh-fest as the Spurs blew the Grizzlies away and cast serious doubt over the notion that Memphis belonged in the Conference Finals and the second game in the series didn’t start off very confidently.

But just like the miracle they’ve seemed to be, the Grizzlies willed themselves back into the contest and took the Spurs deep into the fourth quarter by actually competing and making it a contest. Unlike in the first game of the series, Memphis was able to get scoring production from more than one guy and Zach Randolph decided to show up and provide for the Grizzlies.

Four Grizzlies players went into double digit scoring on the night with Jerryd Bayless threw down over 15 points off the bench for Memphis and the Grizzlies ended up getting over 40 points out of three players which ended up being huge down the stretch for Memphis. What also ended up being great was the point Memphis got from bit guys like Quincey Pondexter and Kenyon Dooling which helped keep Memphis close in the fourth quarter.

Memphis’ late surge helped them to a 15-2 run to end the fourth quarter and force overtime in San Antonio.

But the Spurs were ultimately the better team because — well, they’re the better team in the series. Memphis seems to have lucked their way into the Conference Finals, or at least it seems so after the way they’ve played so far in the series. Game 2 was a lot better in terms of a performance from Memphis than the abortion that was Game 1.

There’s work still to be done if the Grizzlies want to win this series and the work starts with winning an actual game against San Antonio. The series is headed back to Memphis for two, which means the Grizzlies have a great chances of getting a game back, especially after they hustled in Game 2. The Grizzlies are a different team at home in front of a friendly crowd, but so far nothing much has phased the Spurs and losing a single game won’t be enough to make them cower.
