We’re just a few hours into the first day of Wimbledon, and it’s already proving to be an interesting tournament. For those of you that missed it, Monica Puig beat 5-seeded Sara Errani in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-2. It’s always hard to see a top 5 player not make it past the first round of a Grand Slam Tournament, but that’s the game for you. Anything can happen, and you certainly can’t count anybody out. This 19-year-old from Puerto Rico has sure made a great debut in Wimbledon. Yes, I said debut. For her first game at The All England Club, the 65th ranked woman in the world played an outstanding game of tennis. It’s nice to see a Cinderella story start early in the tournament, and this could be it.

(2) Azarenka had a different result than Errani, she came up with a win, but at a price. Early in the second set, Victoria Azarenka took to her serve and during one point she landed awkwardly on her right knee. The pain and discomfort was obvious, she had to take a seat on the bench and get it wrapped up by her medical team. She managed to play through it, but there were a few times that you could tell the injury was setting in. She ended up winning in straight sets against Maria Joao Koehler, 6-1, 6-2. I don’t know for sure how serious the injury is, but I don’t think it looks too good for Azarenka. She had lost some of her mobility during the match, and on a court like grass, mobility is essential. Only time will tell, and we will get to see Azanrenka play against Flavia Pennetta in the second round.

There haven’t been any real upsets on the men’s side so far, aside from (30) Fognini falling in four sets to Jurgen Melzer. (3) Federer, (10) Cilic, (20) Youzhny, (24) Janowicz, and (25) Paire have all advanced to the second round.

And just think…it’s only day one!
