The New York Giants quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez might have had a break through last week. There were reports that Geno Smith was brutal. That would make Sanchez the better of the two and the candidate to retain the starting job.

When asked after the Jets thrashing of the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-13 he was asked if the ‘quarterback competition’ will continue

“Yes, absolutely,” Ryan said, via ESPNNewYork.com. “We’ll see how it goes. I’m not … we’re not willing to name a starting quarterback right now.”

“Will we name one before the Giants game?” Ryan continued. “I don’t know, but right now, we’re not comfortable making that decision.”

We presumably mean would mean him and the hands-on general manager John Idzik.

Geno Smith didn’t play in the second preseason game. Mark Sanchez completed 13 of 23 passes for 169 yards.

“I feel like with Geno not playing, [the competition] was going to go on until he got another shot,” said Sanchez.

Sanchez threw one touchdown and had another pass intercepted.

“That shouldn’t happen,” Sanchez said. “I’ve got to get rid of that ball sooner. I know better than that.”
