Quinton Coples of the New York Jets was scheduled to undergo a procedure for his ankle on Tuesday. This leaves the Jets a little uneasy going forward, as they have to try to find a replacement for the linebacker. Well it seems like we have to look no further, as they may have found one, albeit not who people may have expected.

Garrett McIntyre is actually third on the depth chart behind Coples, and fellow linebacker Antwan Barnes. It has been reported that McIntyre will fill the role of Coples while he is out indefinitely recovering from the surgery. So far, head coach Rex Ryan has liked what he’s seen from McIntyre, and has high praises for the linebacker. Here’s what he had to say about the decision to replace Coples with McIntyre, on an article by ESPN.

"He challenges guys. In the game, we had a corner cover a running back and Garrett had to cover the wideout in the slot. [He] never flinched, just got the job done, even though that wasn’t an ideal situation for us. Garrett’s just a guy [who’s] smart, knows the defense, we can plug him in a lot of different spots and he does a tremendous job."

Hopefully Ryan is right about the decision, as the Jets have a big hole to fill with Coples’ absence. The assumption is that Coples will be back soon, but as with any injury, unexpected things have been known to happen from time to time.

What do you think about the Jets’ decision to overlook the depth chart and move Garrett McIntyre to a starter?
