As expected, New York Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia underwent surgery Wednesday, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. The surgery was to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow.

Mejia appeared to be a bright spot before getting hurt in a game against the San Diego Padres on August 17. In five starts, Mejia was 1-2 with a 2.30 ERA.  He gave up 28 hits, but only walked four and struck out 27 in 27.1 innings of work.

At just 23 years old, the Mets have high hopes for the native of the Domincan Republic.

Mejia received interest from several teams, including powers like the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees when he decided to play in the United State, but ultimately most teams decided he was too small to play in the MLB. Eventually, the Mets signed him for just $16,500. He made his Mets organizational debut in 2007 and made his MLB debut in 2010. He was up and down between the minors and majors before tearing his medial collateral ligament in 2011. He finally made it back to the majors on June 26, 2013. He pitched seven scoreless innings in a 11-0 victory over the Washington Nationals.

Mejia is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
