The New York Jets season is off to a better start than expected. They’re 4-3 and second in the AFC East and are just missing out on a Wild Card berth via a tie breaker with the San Diego Chargers, if the season ended today.

That surprising start might have bought Ryan a little bit more time with the team.

We’re happy with Rex,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said, via Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. “Coaches have to be good teachers and good leaders and I think he’s both.”

Johnson said he’ll wait to make a statement after the season is end. Which makes sense, there is still a lot of games left and making a decision would be premature.

“I will make a statement after the season,” Johnson said. “I never make any comments regarding contracts during the season.”

He couldn’t even indicate which way he is leaning.

“I don’t make any statements like that. The only thing I’ll say is I’m happy with him. I think he’s a great teacher, a good teacher, maybe a great teacher and a good leader.”
