The Miami Marlins have made being a bad baseball team look easy but it’s a trend their looking to change. After locking up catcher Jarrod Saltalmaccia to a mega deal, the Marlins have made move to shore up their infield by signing shortstop Rafael Furcal to a one year deal worth about $3.5 million plus incentives.

Ken Rosenthal reports that that deal will become official once a physical is passed by Furcal but also mentions that he will be playing a new position with Miami. The Marlins already have a shortstop in Adeiny Hechavarria which means Furcal will switch back to second base, a position he’s not played since the 2004 season.

So after a decade of playing at shortstop, Furcal seems to be heading off to baseball heaven — or at least the real life equivalent to that. Nobody goes to Miami unless you want to cash in and get a nice tan which is likely what Saltalamaccia is doing and what Furcal will as well. This isn’t to say either player will mail it in but if things go south in Miami, there’s always the beach to cheer you up as you count your cash.
