AFC Championship betting odds 2014: Broncos favored over Patriots

The Denver Broncos will be hosting the New England Patriots in the 2014 AFC Championship Game, which will take place at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The game will be taking place Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. ET on CBS and the early betting line has been released.

For the first time since 2006, the Patriots will be an underdog in the postseason.

According to the fine folks in Las Vegas from Bovada.lv, the Broncos have opened as a 6.5-point favorite over the New England Patriots.

The over/under for the game has been set at 54.5 points.

When the Patriots and Broncos met this season in Foxboro, New England was able to come away with a 34-31 win in overtime. New England also won the meeting between the two teams in 2012, but this time could be different with the Broncos playing at a high level and the game being played in Denver at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Who do you think will come away from the AFC Championship game with the win and earn a berth in the Super Bowl? Sound off in the comments section below with your thoughts and predictions.

Pats, they always seem to get the best of Peyton.

  • Phillip79

Hopefully the pats but they have so many injuries its gonna take a miracle.

  • Broncos Chris

Broncos baby. We r the team of destiny. Praying for a quick Chris Harris recovery. Go broncos

    • scariestdemocrat

Last I heard, torn ACL takes a few weeks at least lol

  • wierdo

Pats always beat the Broncs, and Brady has beaten Manning 12 out of the ten times they have played.

  • wierdo

12 out of fifteen I meant

  • DBF

wow, lots of Pats love, guess the pros (odds makers) must all be way off and we all know Vegas always loses

    • nate

Solid snarky comment, but that’s not quite the way it works. The odds aren’t a prediction, it’s a way to stimulate and even out betting. Vegas doesn’t lose money if the Pats win. Vegas always makes their money.

  • LIB4EVER

Denver will beat the pat this time around

  • Marcus Duvall

The Broncos are not playing at a high level. Their play against SD was not very good. SD though was too busy hurting themselves to do anything until the 4th quarter.

    Brady VS. Manning: Advantage Brady!
Belichick Vs. Fox: No contest! Belichick!
Pats D VS Broncos D: Advantage Patriots!
Pats passing VS. Broncos: Advantage Pats!
Pats rush VS Broncos rush: Advantage Pats!

The only thing the Broncos have on the Pats (thanks to injuries) is receivers. Nothing else is to their advantage.

    • LTGray

Agree that the Pats have the better coach, but that’s it. That may be enough.

Last I checked, the Pats D won’t be playing the Broncos D, nor will Brady and Manning be on the field at the same time. The Pats O is better than the Broncos D, and the Broncos O is better than the Pats D. That’s why they combined for 65 points last time.

You didn’t mention special teams. Another wild card. I would have given the return advantage to NE, but Denver had two returns today that could have easily been TDs (one was called back because of a penalty, and the other one….never mind). I think next week is anyone’s guess.

    • anon76returns

Advantage Brady? Exactly how did it go last time Brady played Manning in the playoffs? Oh yeah … http://www.nfl.com/videos/indianapolis-colts/09000d5d8262bc0f/This-Day-in-Football-2006-AFC-Championship-Game

      • Chris

Brady is 10-4 against Manning, but good job picking one instance in which Manning won and using it fit your argument.

        • anon76returns

First of all, “Brady vs. Manning” is absolute BS- the two are never on the field together.
Second of all, look back at those games- Manning’s passer rating was higher, and he was playing against statistically better defenses. So as much as they can be judged individually (as opposed to the team statistic of wins/losses), Manning has outperformed Brady, but has been let down by his team.
Third, I found the best match for the upcoming game- Brady playing in a Conference title at Manning’s home field. It just so happens that under that singular circumstance, Brady’s team hasn’t fared all that well against Manning’s. Why should what happens in September or November in Foxboro be more relevant?

          • scariestdemocrat

“First of all, “Brady vs. Manning” is absolute BS- the two are never on the field together. ”
Then why’d you bring it up in your first post?
“Advantage Brady? Exactly how did it go last time Brady played Manning in the playoffs?”
Can’t have it both ways bud… ah… I mean chris.

          • anon76returns

I didn’t “bring it up” in my first post. I replied to a post that claimed “Brady VS. Manning: Advantage Brady!”

The claim was ridiculous on a couple of levels, In my first post I brought up the fact that Manning’s team beat Brady’s team the last time the two met in the playoffs. When this indisputable fact was challenged, I brought up some of the other reasons that “B v M: advantage B” is such a stupid concept. In retrospect I could have led with the team vs. individual point, but frankly when faced with such an idiotic framing it is sometimes difficult to find the lowest hanging fruit.

    • KT

Okay Homer! Not very good? Denver only gave up 65 yards rushing and sacked Rivers 4 times. What game where you watching? Denver gave them 3 turnovers (including the onside kick) and they still walked away with the win. Until we lost our starting cornerback (Chris Harris tore his ACL with 8 minutes left in the third), the defense shut SD down. His replacement Q.Jammer gave up multiple big plays that allowed SD to make it look like a game. Defense was dominant as was Denver’s running game. New England is always a tough match up, but on the road they do not have as much magic. You might want to look at some of the team stats before posting all your “Advantage Patriots” postings. Should be a good game. Except according to you, it will be no contest for the Pats. Take off your Brady-Shaded Glasses and keep it real!

      • joshua highhouse

Good show at least someone knows what theyre tlkn bout here! Broncos will handle brady n cmpny handily this sun you will c. Even without harris miller n clady pats r gng dwn nooo doubt bet the house on it

      • scariestdemocrat

Do you have any doubt that if the pats get a three turnover advantage they’ll win? And Chris Harris is out for denver. Also, denver held the bolts to 65 rushing yards mostly because they had to come from behind… if the chargers had BB coaching them… they may have won that game.

Still… gonna be a fun one to watch – unlike most of the games last weekend which were poorly coached imho. Even the pats rout wasn’t a great game – unless you were a pats fan then… awesome- haven’t seen a run offense like that from anyone in years.

      • http://www.cafepress.com/nottexas unionssuck

san diego is not that good, theyw ere ucky to be there due to a miswed kc field goal attempt

    • joshua highhouse

Ummmm yeah no u r wrong bud! Y dnt u check the stats of both ur tom brady n my peyton manning this season n get bck to reality.. simply put peyton manning n compny is too high powered to lose against brady

      • Marcus Duvall

Manning is all about stats. So while he was chasing records Brady was helping his team replace the receivers they lost.
The Broncos had a great early season. And Manning got some great stats against some poor teams.
But his team barely survived against Dallas, a SD team that played terrible and were blindsided by Brady and the Pats after they had a 24PT headstart and lost.
Manning is great at compiling stats. Not great in the postseason. Not great against Brady and the Pats. And Fox is as bad a coach as Garret or Andy Reid.

For the Broncos to win the Pats would have to choke because the Broncos can’t beat them otherwise.
A 22nd rank defense that may be like 29 now.
If Rivers and the clumsy and aimless Chargers could score 17 in one quarter against the Broncos, The Pats would’ve scored 28-35.

The Patriots coach is a disgrace to the NFL and to America . They made Lance Armstrong give back his awards when he was caught cheating . They should take away all SuperBowls won under this disgraced coach . He is a cheat…..and that’s why they have been so successful . His legacy ? He is a cheater and dishonest . The Broncos are a class organization that America can look up to . The Bronco’s owner fired Mcdaniels (a protege of Bill’s ) when they discovered he was cheating . They were embarrassed and ashamed of his actions and he was fired immediately . Now both of these crooks work for the Patriots . If that doesn’t say something about their organization , then nothing does . They are cheaters and don’t care how they win . Tom Brady is only as good as his crooked , cheating coaches (which make him look good) . Manning is a class act . A true superstar . And Brady ? He should have many asterisks next to his name ! And Bill should be barred from the league and put in prison . He is a Loser and a Low-Life !

          • tyassa32

            AMEN!!!!

          • Daniel Brockway

Don’t forget the broncos had a larger scandal then the pats. Funny how people like to forget. The broncos were fined almost a million for spending 29 million over the salary cap during their Super Bowl runs. They even almost lost their titles. The pats taped the jet side line the broncos spent 40 percent over the cap and tried to hide it… Your an idiot if you bring either that or “spygate” into this weekend.

          • VoiceOfReason

If you think these incidents even belong in the same sentence , then you’re an idiot . You cannot even compare the two . The Patriots tried to cheat on the game , itself …..not accounting . Is that all you ignorant Pats fans can come up with ? Now I’ve heard everything . Maybe the Broncos practiced and prepared more for this upcoming game than the Patriots did . So yeah…..you will say that was cheating and this is why they won , right ? My God….stay off the public forums !

          • Daniel Brockway

my point was neither should be brought up dumbass! good one though. Plus they are the same the fine shows that to be worse. hiding 28 million so you can have more big name players on the O line. thanks for the insight. You seem so on your game haha.

          • VoiceOfReason

Thank You , I am on my game ! It was not hiding . It was cooridinating with time periods and windows that were thought and presented to be legal based on advice and information from lawyers and accountants which had nothing to do with the owner trying to be dishonest . The Broncos owner is not a crook who “willingly” tries to cheat like Belichick and McDaniels . You are the Dumbass and you need to get your facts straight before you come on public forums and embarrass yourself . If you did your homework (which I’m sure is a word that you’ve always had problems with your entire life) you would learn that Pat Bowlen is one of the strictest coaches with zero tolerance on any players or staff members who will tarnish the Broncos name and image . I bet you are one of those people who stand in line at the grocery store reading the headlines of the National Enquirer and run with what you’ve read . Does that about sum you up , Beuford ? My God…..why do you keep humiliating yourself here ? This is starting to become sad and less entertaining .

  • LTGray

The Broncos and Patriots have faced each other three times in the playoffs. The home team has won every game. (Denver leads 2-1.)

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have faced each other three times in the playoffs. The home team has won every game. (Brady leads 2-1.)

  • oceantracks

Manning and Brady are both the class of the league, I wish they both could win.

  • Peyton18Manning

One of the blessings in the disguise for the broncos were them losing to the chargers and patriots…that opens your eyes to your flaws and let you go back to the game film and work on them…Advantage Broncos.

  • Jacob T Hester II

Manning vs Brady is the Super Bowl!

  • http://sbpra.com/paulvsuffriti Paul V. Suffriti

The Pats were the underdogs when they played earlier in the regular season and won. It is hard to beat a very good team twice in one year but the Pats are playing well on defense and their running attack could be the difference maker in this meeting…..6.5 points seems a bit much, should be a 3 or 4 point game difference.

  • All-American

    • VoiceOfReason

Ooooops ! Hope you didn’t bet any money on that (ha! ha!) Manning knew this was in the bag before he even walked out on the field . Outplayed and outcoached . Broncos AFC Champions !

  • Tom

The Broncos will come out on top and have another Lombardi trophy at the end of the season to add to their trophy case.

  • Super Kent

Bill’s thoughtful and objective approach is better than what Peyton and John Fox bring in the leadership roll. Although Tom is a machine as a quarterback the Patriots don’t have to rely on him. They’ll going to win by running. I predict it won’t even be close.

butthurt much? lol. get over it. you’re probably a post maning bronco fan like 75% of the people i have seen posting this week. quit crying. this is football.

        • VoiceOfReason

I am just stating facts which you can’t handle . It is what it is……just like it is obvious you are a b–ch for making the comment that you made . And I’m sure your butt does hurt all the time for different reasons . Truth is…..I never liked Manning as I thought he was too dramatic on the field . But in terms of class and professionalism , there is no comparison between the two . Brady is on a team that cheats to win (period) . Now come cry to me little one :) If you are seeing 75% of the people liking Manning , then you need to get your GED to figure out why because you are in some serious denial . Again….just facts !

          • Toni Michelle Smith

i love how you emphasize class and being someone america can look up to and then come back and insult my intelligence, call me a b–tch, and throw in an adolescent remark about my butt hurting. way to drive your point home. stay classy. and get over spy gate already. nobody gives a fack anymore. good luck sunday. go pats!

          • VoiceOfReason

You continue to prove my point . It is you who attacked me first with the butt hurting remark…..and it is you who can’t get over yourself . I think you need to look at your first comment again and come out of your denial . It’s not about YOU and nobody cares what YOU think (or what I think) . And for the record…..I NEVER said that “I” was someone America looks up to . Why do people like you change content to self-serve your own insecurities ? Is it because you have nothing tangible to say and have to resort to making things up ? Yeah….you go with your Pats (ha! ha!) . Losers should stick together….so that’s a good match . And by the way, Are you trying to tell me that Belichick and McDaniels were never caught cheating ? Is that what you are trying to tell me and everyone reading these posts ? Ha! Ha! I have done nothing but tell the truth here , including the truth about you ! I don’t have to drive any point home with you . I’m just coasting and letting you drive my point all by yourself !

        • VoiceOfReason

Also……EVERYONE has picked the Broncos to win . EVERYONE (including the odds makers in Vegas) . They are picked to win the SuperBowl , for God’s sake . Now New England claims Brady is sick ? Another lie from Belichick ? All he can do is lie and cheat along with his side-kick McDaniels (ha! ha!) . This is football Miss Smith…….and like it or not , your team is a bunch of losing cheaters who will not triumph . In fact……you may not see them in a SuperBowl for another 10 to 15 years (if they’re lucky) . Look like I’m crying ? (ha! ha!) And what kind of woman stands by a cheater ? Hmmmm……….

  • urownexperience

The Pats fullback is in for a very big surprise. I hope he doesn’t get hurt. The Broncos mean business.

Seems everyone missed one of the factors that helped initiate in the San Diego comeback. With Denver ahead by 17 in the third quarter, the game was halted for the “Punt, Pass and Kick awards ceremony for the kids. With the players standing around for a significant amount of time, the game resumed, but not before the Chargers had caught their breath and seized the momentum. Why wasn’t this done at the half?
