New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib left the AFC Championship game after taking a shot from Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker. It looked like Welker was trying to set a pick, but it ended up coming across more like a safety hitting a receiver.

Welker maintains that it wasn’t intentional and he wasn’t trying to hit Talib.

“It was one of those plays where it’s kind of a rough play, and I was trying to get him to go over the top, and I think he was thinking the same thing and wanted to come underneath and we just kind of collided,” Welker said, via WEEI.com. “It wasn’t a deal where I was trying to hit him or anything like that. I hope he’s OK — he’s a great player and a big part of their defense.”

There is no doubt that Talib exiting the game helped the Broncos, but had he remained in the game there is no guarantee the outcome would’ve been different.
