Unless you are just coming out from under your rock, you know why everyone in the sports world appears to be talking about Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. If you don’t, all you need to know is that he had an epic post-game interview after the Seahawks clinched the NFC title and you can watch it here.

Sherman’s interview was met with mixed reaction, with a number of people instantly beginning to throw some criticism his way and calling him names that shouldn’t be repeated.

To Sherman’s credit, he explained the situation and made it clear that he does not want to be the NFL’s villain and he wants you to judge him by the character that he is when he’s off of the playing field.

“It was loud, it was in the moment, and it was just a small part of the person I am,” Sherman wrote in SI’s MMQB column. “I don’t want to be a villain, because I’m not a villainous person. … To those who would call me a thug or worse because I show passion on a football field — don’t judge a person’s character by what they do between the lines. Judge a man by what he does off the field, what he does for his community, what he does for his family.”

Sherman doesn’t show up in police reports. He does a number of great things for his community and youth, and he is a man with an inspiring story.

If you don’t know who Richard Sherman really is, take some time to read up on his background and you may be impressed with the kind of person that he truly is. Heat of the moment interviews have the potential to make anyone look bad and while he may not be the nicest player on the field, he is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL today.
