Jordan Spieth is in the lead after scorching the North course with a nine-under 63.  Hard to believe Spieth made his pro debut at Torrey last year:

"I played eight tournaments before as an amateur, but when you say that you’re a pro and you don’t have the A next to your name, it’s a different feeling teeing off for the first time.  I just remember trying to fight hard, my emotions were up and down.  Michael, my caddie, will tell you it was the hardest week to caddie for me all year."

Nicolas Colsaerts went through an adjustment period last season after playing on the European Tour for 10 years.  He also took a slight dig at the Euro Tour:

"After playing 10 years over in Europe where I basically could play all the courses eyes closed, it was very different.  But yeah, I was a little disappointed last year, this is why I’m back.  I’d like to feel a little more comfortable over here and play this TOUR, which is by far the best in the world with the best courses."

Marc Leishman shot one-under on the South:

"Yeah, I played really well, probably one of the best ball‑striking days I’ve had ever."

Charley Hoffman is pissed:

"I’m pretty pissed off right now making bogey on the last hole, I won’t lie.  Got out of position and just kept out of position.  Not real happy, wanted to get a few more on the North course."

Tiger Woods is impressed with Spieth’s game:

"Same thing I saw at the Presidents Cup, the kid’s got talent.  He hits it a long way, phenomenal putter.  He made a boatload of putts today from the 10 to 20‑foot range, and that’s on poa greens, that’s not easy to do."

Pat Perez is not pleased with his one-under par round on the North.  He shot a spectacular bogey-free 67 on the South yesterday:

"If I would have played like that yesterday, I probably would have shot 80."

Mickelson’s back continues to give him trouble, and he is worried about forming bad habits because of the heavy rough at Torrey:

"I love playing in San Diego and this is a place where I grew up playing, so I really want to play.  And part of me also says that I’m getting in bad habits, and if I hit it in this rough here, I’ve really got an issue because I’ve got to swing awfully hard to get it out and it jars it, so I’m a little torn right now on the best plan of action."
