Philip Seymour Hoffman found dead in Manhattan apartment

According to the Wall Street Journal, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in Manhattan apartment. It is shocking news and outside of those simple details there isn’t much more to report at the moment.

Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Capote (2005). He received another three Academy Award nominations for his supporting work in Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Doubt (2008) and The Master (2012).

[UPDATE 1:33 PM:] The Wall Street Journal has since posted this:

"Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan."

[UPDATE 1:36 PM:] The New York Post is reporting that it was the result of a drug overdose:

"Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose inside a Greenwich Village home on Sunday, cops said.Hoffman’s body was found in an apartment at 35 Bethune St., sources said.Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.Hoffman has admittedly struggled with drug addiction in the past, and reportedly checked himself into rehab last year for heroin abuse."

[UPDATE 1:52 PM:]  TMZ says law enforcement confirms report.

"Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday in a New York City apartment of a reported drug overdose.Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … the actor was found Sunday morning inside of his Greenwich apartment … and they’re still on scene investigating.Details surrounding his death are unclear … but the actor had struggled with drug problems … most recently checking himself into a rehab facility for heroin back in May.As we previously reported … Hoffman had been clean for 23 years but fell off the wagon in 2012."

[UPDATE 1:54 PM:]  ABC News says “no evidence of criminality” and tweets photo of police outside residence.

[UPDATE 1:59 PM:]  New York Times says Hoffman was found by a friend.

"The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46, had been found in his West Village apartment around 11:30 a.m. by a friend who had become concerned at not being able to reach Mr. Hoffman.A cause of death had not yet been determined, the official said, but it appeared to have been the result of an overdose.A woman answering the phone at Mr. Hoffman’s New York production company declined to comment. “I don’t have a comment at this time on that, thank you,” she said."
