They took negotiations about as far as they could on Tuesday, but according to Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots and wide receiver Julian Edelman were unable to reach a deal, meaning that the slot man will now go and test the free agent market.

It was reported earlier on Tuesday that the team had approached Edelman with a potential deal, which obviouslt has fallen through.

With Edelman more than likely not returning to the Pats in 2013, it ends a five-year stint with Belichick, Brady and company for the wideout. The team drafted him in 2009 in the in the 7th round with the 232nd overall pick, which given his performance over the years, ended up being a steal.

Having caught 105 balls last season, it’s all but guaranteed that Edelman will get a lot of money from someone on the free agent market, whether he’s considered overpaid or not.
