On Thursday morning, the Carolina Panthers cut veteran wide receiver Steve Smith, who had spent his entire career with the organization, and even helped lead them to their one Super Bowl appearance following the 2003 season. There’s no doubt that Panthers fans have become attached to their loud-mouthed star, which makes it heartbreaking to see him go, and they showed that today by protesting the move outside the stadium.

Although their history in the league is short, no one in this history of the Panthers is more famous and beloved than Smith, and the realization that he will be playing elsewhere has hit the fans hard, and understandably so.

After looking at this, it will be interesting to see if whoever he goes to plays the Panthers in Carolina, as the welcome back reception that he will get should rival anything we’ve seen before.
