After visiting with the New York Giants on Tuesday, defensive end Robert Ayers is returning to the site of his Super Bowl loss to play for his brand new team. According to Fox Sports NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Giants have reached a two-year agreement with Ayers.

It’s not as though there was a ton of space on the Broncos roster, nor in their salary cap, to bring back Ayers this season. But the Giants have a glaring need at defensive end in wake of Justin Tuck bolting to Oakland and Ayers will help fill that need.

Ayers was a former first-round picky the Broncos and he’s played well for them ever since, so it’s not as though the Giants are necessarily bargain shopping at this point. But they also didn’t break the bank to sign Ayers as he’s not yet proven to be a defensive star.

That opportunity could come in New York as the Giants are looking to revamp their defensive approach and erase their abysmal season in 2013 from their memory. The Giants aren’t fixed by signing Ayers but his addition helps keep them on that path.
