This past weekend’s NBA playoff coverage on TNT — and all future coverage, for that matter — was tinted by the fact that Craig Sager wasn’t there. Sager, as we found out last week, is battling acute leukemia and won’t be doing any of his normal sideline reporting duties.

While the tributes have been coming in left and right from his TNT brethren, mostly in the form of really bad suits, the most touching tribute came when San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich sent Sager a touching message in which he promised to be nice when Sager comes back.

In response, Sager has jokingly noted that if Popovich were to be nice to him, it just wouldn’t feel right.

Per SI.com’s Richard Deitsch:

"“Pop saying he wanted me back and then promising to be nice? I was like, Oh, my God, that’s unbelievable, what an honor,” said Sager. “But then I started thinking about it: If I come back and Pop starts being nice to me, it just wouldn’t be right. I want him to go Serbian on me.”"

While Sager can joke all he wants, the only thing that will make us happy is to see him back on the sidelines as the next ugly suit we see him wear may very well be the most beautiful thing he’s ever put on.
