Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice made his first appearance in court on Thursday for his trial regarding to alleged assault of his fiancee, now wife, Janay Palmer, at an Atlantic City hotel in February.

Rice entered a plea of not guilty on the charges and prosecutors offered a plea deal of probation, no jail time and anger management classes, according to the Baltimore Sun.

If Rice does not accept the plea deal, he would be facing up to five years in prison.

Once the legal process plays out, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will need to review all of the findings to determine whether or not the league will suspend Ray Rice for any portion of the season.

It will be interesting to see how the process continues to play out, but we should be closer to a resolution following today’s court appearance.
