Ty Isaac is transferring from USC to be close to his home in Joliet, Ill. after his request to be released form his scholarship was granted on Wednesday.

“I’ve been released from my scholarship at USC,” Isaac said. “It was based on a family decision. My mom isn’t well so I wanted to be closer to my family.

Isaac was a four-star running back recruit in the Trojans 2013 class when the 247Sports Composite Rankings had him ranked as the No. 8 all-purpose back and the No. 2 recruit in the state of Illinois.

“I really enjoyed my time at USC but it’s a decision that I had to make and I made it.”

The 6-3, 235-pound runner played in 14 games as a true freshman and rushed for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries. Isaac will be eligible to play immediately in 2014 wherever he decides to transfer and it could be Notre Dame after the Fighting Irish finished as the runner-up to USC when Isaac made his commitment to the Trojans prior to his senior season.

Ohio State, Michigan, Illinois and Northwestern could also get in the picture for Isaac, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.

With Isaac no longer in the picture, USC is left with four running backs on scholarship including Junior Javorius Allen who rushed for 785 yards last season, junior Tre Madden who ran for 703 yards and sophomore Justin Davis who had 389 yards. Senior D.J. Morgan also returns after missing last season with a knee injury.

The University of Illinois is roughly 111 miles from his home in Shorewood while Northwestern is 55 miles and his potential preferred destination of Notre Dame is 113 miles away. Each of the three would be the closest FBS schools that would all welcome the former four-star recruit who once ran for an Illinois record 515 yards at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in the State Championship Game as a junior.
