The San Francisco 49ers have signed former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde less than a week after drafting him in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. No running backs were taken until the second round, a record for selections that passed without a running back being taken.

Hyde might be the heir apparent to current 49ers running back Frank Gore after a solid career at Ohio State. In four seasons with the Buckeyes, he tallied 3,198 rushing yards (6.1 average) and 37 touchdowns on 523 carries. The 49ers will likely go with a rotation system in the meantime using Hyde in certain complimentary roles to Gore.

The 49ers certainly don’t think Gore’s career is ending soon however.

“I really think Frank has three more good years,” 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said in late March. “I truly believe that. But we’re in a game of taking it one year at a time.”
