According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, we may have all jumped the gun on throwing Derek Fisher into the New York Knicks’ coaching seat. As we found out with Steve Kerr, just because Phil Jackson and the Knicks want someone, doesn’t mean they will get him.

For Fisher, the reasoning is simple. It remains to be seen if he even wants to become an NBA head coach in the first place. Not only is he still playing and contributing to a team that remains alive in the playoffs, but Fisher may have other hopes for his future that do not including sitting on the bench.

Indications are that Derek may wish to become a front-office executive after retiring, rather than becoming the coach of the Knicks or anyone else. He also isn’t in the position to think or decide about that now. He has actual Oklahoma City Thunder games on his mind instead.

Who knows what New York will do if they are spurned by another coaching candidate. However, it may not be the worst thing in the world if the Knicks avoid paying a first-year head coach $25+ million. Everyone loved the Steve Kerr signing for Golden State because everyone loves Steve Kerr, but he has zero coaching experience under his belt. Nothing New York has done recently has seemed smart in the public eye. However, in these instances, perhaps doing nothing is the smartest move.
