Rare laying off employees thanks to poor Kinect Sports Rivals sales

Microsoft is not too big to fail, and the companies associated with it are also held to those same standards.  Rare, the developer in charge of Kinect Sports Rivals, the first big Kinect offering on the Xbox One,  has suffered layoffs due to the lack of sales surrounding the Kinect based title.

As Eurogamer reported, Microsoft has decided to lay off some of the development studio.  In a statement issued by Microsoft to Eurogamer, the company had this to say:

"“At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of Rare’s commitment to this goal, we have made a decision to change our development process and methodology at Rare to best support our future projects, this has led to us reviewing the skills and the makeup of our development teams in our business.“Rare continues to invest in our people and future projects.”"

Kinect Sports Rivals was initially targeted as an Xbox One launch game, but then was pushed back to April.  Once the game was released, sales figures never measured up, and it actually appears that the game was produced at a loss.

With the recent changes surrounding Xbox One, and one of the headliner titles for the Kinect now taking place, the future of the consoles extra peripheral seem even more cloudy.
