Robinson Cano has become the first Seattle Mariner, since Ichiro, to reach base safely in 28 straight games in their first season with the Mariners. Cano, who was signed on a 240-million-dollar-ten-year deal in the offseason, and has been splendid for the Mariners so far.

While his highly touted power is yet to surface, Cano does have a great .326 batting average  — which ranks in the top five in the major leagues — and has batted in a total of 27 runners.

It isn’t hard to see why Cano has had so much success either.

Last season in the Bronx, before heading into free agency, Cano hit 27 home runs with 107 runs batted in and a .314/.383/.516 slashline. As his career has been so impressive, when Cano hit the free agent market, he was a hot commodity, and hence, was rewarded with a huge deal from the Mariners.

Whilst Cano is off to a hot start, the Mariners hitters have struggled on the whole. With no clear leadoff man, and injuries to Corey Hart and Logan Morrison, the Mariners have struggled to break above .500 so far this season.

Seattle currently sit seven and a half games back of the Oakland Athletics with a 22-23 record. Whilst thus far, their massive spending hasn’t quite payed dividends, if Cano can add some power, they could just launch a challenge for a wildcard spot.
