Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are set to clash in the 2014 Champions League Final on Saturday. It pits two teams against one another that know each other well. This is the fifth final between two teams from the same country and domestic league, though the first time both teams have been from the same city. It is also the second year in a row that the Champions League final has been between two clubs from the same league.

There is a huge experience gap at this stage of the tournament between the two sides however. This is Atletico Madrid’s second European Cup final appearance and they lost to Bayern Munich in 1974. For Real Madrid, it is their 13th European Cup final and they have 9 trophies to show for it and are going for a record 10th.

The two clubs have met 194 times in league and Spanish Cup games. Real Madrid has won 102 of those games, while Ateltico has just won 46 times. There have also been 46 draws. The team met in the Copa Del Rey semi-finals, and Madrid won 3-0 at home and later on the road 2-0.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said that his focus since replacing Jose Mourinho has been getting his team to the Champions League final

“We began the season thinking in this objective, to reach this final, to win La Decima,” Ancelotti said, via ESPN FC. “We have achieved that. For all madridistas, tomorrow is a special day. Everyone knows the importance of this competition for Real Madrid, and my job is to do the best. I said that on first day I came here, I would do the best I could to win this competition, and we are very close.”

For Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, it is his first Champions League final. He says that this game is a reward for all the hard work he has put in over the years, which contains its fair share of trophies like three La Liga titles, three Copas del Rey and three Spanish Supercopas with Madrid, as well as two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup with Spain. The Champions League has eluded his trophy case though.

“This is a unique experience,” Ramos said, via ESPN FC. “It is a reward for all the hard work and sacrifice over so many years. Although, we look it from the perspective of the group, this is the payoff for the work the team has put in throughout the last few years, during which time we hadn’t been fortunate enough to reach the final. At last the time has come to experience this amazing moment.”

Fortunately for Ramos he has an incredibly experienced manager in Ancelotti leading him. He has won the competition four times, twice as a player and twice as a manager.

“I’ve had a lot from this competition; I’ve won it four times, this is my seventh final, so I can’t ask for more,” Ancelotti said, via UEFA.com. “Everyone knows how important this competition is for Real Madrid but my job is to do my best to help us win this competition – and we’re very close.”

Atletico Madrid might not have the European championship level pedigree of Real Madrd, and manager Diego Simeone might not have the resume of Ancelotti, but they’re a squad who has won the Europa League recently and is fresh off a La Liga title win.

“This is amazing; as coaches, we’ve grown as a result of the players that we’ve worked with,” Simeone said. “I have to work according to what my players need and decide to set up the match in the best way possible. We know where we have to be careful and we’ll try to find ways to go forward. We’ve just won the Spanish Liga, a lovely success, but there’s work to be done for this unique match.”
