The New York Mets haven’t had a great deal to be excited about during the 2014 season, as they currently occupy the basement of the NL East despite modestly high expectations. However, the Mets are set to gain a potentially impactful offensive piece on Wednesday in the form of catcher Travis d’Arnaud.

ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin brings the news:

"Travis d’Arnaud is expected to be activated from the disabled list for Wednesday’s matinee series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sandy Alderson said.D’Arnaud is due to play a third and final rehab game with Binghamton on Tuesday night."

D’Arnaud hasn’t appared in a game with the Mets since going down with a concussion on May 13th, but in a world where the Mets have David Wright and very little else in the way of exciting position players, his return could be a nice infusion. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old catcher struggled a bit prior to this injury, posting a .196/.274/.314 slash line for the year, but with a pedigree that includes lofty rankings on various prospect lists, the talent is certainly there for the young catcher.

In the absence of d’Arnaud, Terry Collins and the Mets have been forced to utilize the duo of Anthony Recker and Juan Centeno at the catcher spot (yikes), and even a slightly rusty d’Arnaud would appear to be a significant upgrade from the moment he sets foot on the field. The Mets are probably already out of the race as the calendar nears June, but players like Travis d’Arnaud are the future, and New York needs to see what they have.
