The Seattle Mariners pitcher, James Paxton, was close to coming off of the disabled list after missing the past six weeks with a shoulder injury. Eager to rejoin the Mariners, the rookie left-hander will unfortunately be shut down again.

More from MLB

Paxton recently threw thee innings and 62 pitches in a minor league game Saturday at Triple-A Tacoma. This was the first time he hit the field since April 8. He allowed three runs off four hits, including three doubles.

The rehab game didn’t go very well. In addition to not being completely sharp in his throws, afterwards he complained of soreness. Originally thinking it was due to getting back on the mound after such a lengthy period of time, the pain continued. He then met with team orthopedist Dr. Edward Khalfayan who recommended an MRI be taken.

This revealed inflammation in his shoulder.

It is being reported that Paxton will be completely shut down from any throwing activities until all the inflammation dissipates; which could take anywhere from five to seven days.

Due to not being able to rejoin the lineup, right-hander Brandon Maurer will likely be guaranteed at least one more start. Maurer is 1-3 with a 6.99 ERA throughout six starts.

Paxton debuted with the Mariners last September and was impressive from the beginning of his time with the team. He has a 5-0 record and a 1.75 ERA throughout six starts. He was also ranked as a consensus top 100 prospect prior to the season.

As mentioned, April 8 was Paxton’s last major league game where he suffered a strained lat muscle during the beginning of the game against the Los Angeles Angels. He was originally placed on a 15 day disabled list.
