It was Dinosaur Education Day at Citi Field in the Queens borough of New York. Thousands of kids from grades kindergarten through 8th were in attendance for the game, which was precluded by an enthusiastic speaker, video board demos, and animatronic dinosaurs.

More from MLB

The last part with the animatronic dinos may have had some impact on the game itself. It certainly didn’t sit well with the Mets starter for the game that followed the seminar, Bartolo Colon. During a particularly long stretch of the game, WOR Radio Play-by-Play team Howie Rose and Josh Lewin recounted a scene in the Mets locker room from the pre-game interviews.

As the 41-year old Colon was pitching, Rose was telling listeners that one of the animatronic dinosaurs was brought into the Mets’ clubhouse. The dinosaur was really two men under a costume, but apparently Colon needed some reassurance as he apparently got up immediately and dashed* for the bathroom as the dino walked in.

(*’dashed’ may be a generous word for Mr. Colon)

Reporters and teammates alike joked with the righty that it was just two guys in a costume. Perhaps Bartolo didn’t see this video from a previous Dinosaur Education Day held at Citi Field:

That dino just needed some love and affection. The slight clubhouse scare did not seem to affect Colon’s pitching any, however, as he came out against the Pittsburgh Pirates firing bullets. Colon fired 121 pitches over 7.1 innings allowing just five hits and no runs as the Pirates made him work through some counts, but couldn’t solve the right-hander’s fastball barrage. He struck out nine as the Mets shut-out the Pirates, 5-0.

That’ll show that dinosaur.
