The San Francisco 49ers have had a couple busy offseasons since their turnaround under head coach Jim Harbaugh. But their biggest move has yet to happen, and until some paperwork and tests get cleared, the team won’t have anything to announce on that front. Before the 49ers management team can make an offer to keep QB Colin Kaepernick on the team long-term, they first need to sort out Kaepernick’s legal mess that’s still brewing down in Florida.

More from NFL

We are now in the third month of a Miami investigation into Kaepernick and others, and still we have little upon which to draw conclusions. We know there’s a woman filing charges that likely amount to rape, but we don’t know Kaepernick’s involvement in the matter.

But while the 49ers must wait for more conclusive details in the case, they’ve wasted no time in clearing the proper cap space to make a competitive offer to Kaepernick. The team released defensive back Carlos Rogers, then re-structured the deal of linebacker Navorro Bowman to free more than $8M combined in cap space.

This added space would then allow the team to offer Kaepernick a lucrative long term deal like he’s seeking. Such a deal would not only please the young quarterback, it would make his coach’s life a whole lot easier. “I’m a big proponent of Colin Kaepernick, his abilities,” Jim Harbaugh told the Bee. “On record as stating that I would like to see that happen.”

The wait is almost over for Kaepernick and this case in Miami. Depending on the ruling, expect the 49ers to make a move to lock up their young QB for the future.
