FUTURE MATCH: 8/31: Chivas USA vs. LA Galaxy, 5 p.m. PT

  • The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Robbie Keane, Stefan Ishizaki and Baggio Husidic all scored as the Galaxy rolled to a 3-0 win April 6.
  • The Galaxy have won the last three meetings between the teams, outscoring Chivas USA 9-0, and now have a six-game undefeated streak alive against their in-house rivals (5-0-1).
  • The Galaxy have won 11 of the last 13 league meetings, dating back to 2009. Chivas USA won 1-0 on May 19, 2012, their first victory against the Galaxy since Aug. 23, 2007, snapping an 11-game winless run in SuperClasicos. The 5-0 Galaxy win in the final meeting a year ago was the heaviest defeat for either team in the history of the series, and matched the highest goal output for a team in the series (4/26/2008, LA 5 — CHV 2)
  • Coaches record: Wilmer Cabrera vs. LA: P1 W0 L1 D0 … Bruce Arena v CHV: P16 W11 L3 D2

The LA Galaxy extended their undefeated run to three matches, reaching a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park. The Galaxy sit in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 16 points from 11 games.

Chivas USA lost their second consecutive match on their home ground, falling 3-0 to Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at StubHub Center. Chivas USA sit in ninth place in the Western Conference with 10 points from 13 games.

T-80: “I think that the first three months were tough but now I am finally able to feel like I am in it and able to help,” said Samuel to LAGalaxy.com’s Adam Serrano. “I definitely feel better. I feel stronger. When I arrived, I didn’t feel like I had much strength and force. When I had a ball and I had to pass, it took me two, three seconds to figure out [due to] the quickness and the level that we are playing. But right now, I’m just like everyone else and ready to help the team.”

T-78: “We work to have good performances, to gain confidence, to grow as a team,” said Chivas USA midfielder Mauro Rosales to cdchivasusa.com’s Alex Arpiza. “But the most important thing for us to be able to give our fans a win at home, a win to reward their efforts of always supporting us, regardless of what happens.

“I think it is very important to give them what they really deserve. They have been very loyal in these recent times and I think they deserve much more from us.”

T-75: Live score from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.: New England Revolution 0, New York Red Bulls 1.

T-72: Following the game between Chivas USA and Los Angeles, the Galaxy II will take on the Dayton Dutch Lions in USL Pro action.

T-69: A roundup on yesterday’s scores: Toronto FC 1, San Jose Earthquakes 0…D.C. United 0, Columbus Crew 0…Philadelphia Union 3, Vancouver Whitecaps 3…Chicago Fire 2, Seattle Sounders 3…FC Dallas 3, Colorado Rapids 2…Real Salt Lake 1, Portland Timbers 3.

T-67: Score update from Gillette Stadium: New York Red Bulls 2, New England Revolution 0.

T-62: One major question that must be answered is: will Bruce Arena throw in Brian Perk once again between the pipes? Or will he stick to his guns and bring in Jaime Penedo, something he chose not to do in the first meeting?

T-60: An hour to go. Here is a list of Galaxy Academy games this month.

Congratulations to the Galaxy Academy Under-18s who have won the USSDA Southwest Division title!

T-58: There is a possibility Erick “Cubo” Torres will play in this season’s MLS All-Star Game against Bayern Munich.

“It has been a wonderful year for me, a dream year,” Torres told cdchivasusa.com’s Alex Arpiza. “I have added minutes, I have grown in terms of soccer, as well as personally, and I have scored goals and what I came to do, add minutes, gain experience, become more mature on and off the field. I feel very happy for the improvement I have shown and the reception the MLS has given me.

“I appreciate and feel happy because they value my effort, they value my work and that is important for me. It makes me feel good and I hope to continue on that track. The best part is when your work and effort on the pitch is recognized.”

T-55: “We can’t take anything for granted, definitely not against these guys,” said defender A.J. DeLaGarza to LAGalaxy.com’s Larry Morgan. “We can’t come out thinking we’re bigger or better or anything like that. We know they’re going to be a physical, organized group.”

T-50: Final score from Gillette Stadium: New York Red Bulls 2, New England Revolution 0.

T-49: Robbie Keane will not be with the Galaxy due to Republic of Ireland obligations. The Boys in Green drew with Costa Rica, 1-1.

T-45: Both teams beginning warmups.

T-38: Lineups.

T-32: Today, Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy will make history as the player with the most caps for Chivas USA. This will be Kennedy’s 124th appearance for the Goats.

“It’s something that I’m proud of and I look to build on it,” Kennedy told Alex Arpiza. “For me it was never about how many, but it’s about the quality that is in those appearances. So that’s what I’m going to try and continue to prove is the quality in those appearances.”

T-30: Donovan will be the Galaxy’s captain for this match, while Bocanegra will captain Chivas USA.

T-28: An interesting decision from Arena to start Penedo for this match, given that this is Chivas USA the Galaxy are facing.

T-21: Even more interesting is that Brian Perk is not in the 18 for the Galaxy. I suspect he is assigned to the Galaxy II for the match with Dayton later tonight.

T-18: Got something to say on the game today? Leave a comment and let us know what you think of both teams! Also, be sure to refresh the screen for up-to-the-minute coverage.

T-15: Both teams wrap up warmups. There should be a good turnout for this match.

T-0: Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy reenter the field to the strains of Audiobrain’s…MLS Anthem. Complete with fireworks.

National anthem by Lily Elise.

FIRST HALF START: 5:07 P.M. PT/8:07 P.M. ET

1′ – We’re underway.

2′ – Robbie Rogers with the throw. And that will be called back due to an offsides. Dan Kennedy, already mentioned, with the goal kick,  and Marcelo Sarvas should be done better. Rogers again, and Gyasi Zardes has a poor touch. Agustin Pelletieri with the throw.

3′ – Marcelo Sarvas is clearly annoyed and slams his shoe down in disgust. Strange. A.J. DeLaGarza returns to the central midfield after being on the wings for most of the season he’s been in action.

4′ – Galaxy are building good possession here. Zardes…stopped. With no Robbie Keane in the lineup, this may be a bit more even in terms of the matchup.

5′ – Here’s Donovan. A cross from Rogers fails to find Landon Donovan. Another cross fails to find Gyasi Zardes, that from Dan Gargan.

6′ – Erick Torres with an attempt, only to get swept.

7′ – That was a giveaway to Torres and he skied it.

8′ – Foul on Chivas USA. Here is a free kick from the right side for Stefan Ishizaki. All hands on deck, and Leonardo made a meal of that.

9′ – Juninho and Martin Rivero collide. Galaxy seem to be a bit disorganized in the back.

10′ – Leandro Barrera with his first attempt but it finds Jaime Penedo. Seems a calculated risk for Arena to start Penedo, in the end.

11′ – A diving save by Kennedy on Zardes. Galaxy lead in possession, but possession alone won’t win you games.

12′ – Dan Gargan is shaken up but is able to get up nonetheless. Throw-in, Eric Avila.

13′ – Torres doing some quarterbacking in the midfield. Here comes Zardes. A clean tackle by Bobby Burling. Goal kick, Kennedy.

14′ – Barrera now. Throw-in for Mauro Rosales.

15′  – Speculative overhead from Eric Avila. 15 minutes in, still scoreless.

16′ – Torres is offsides, but that was a bad whiff from Gargan.

17′ – Chivas win a corner for Rosales. Saved by Penedo, cleared by Zardes. Collected by Penedo again.

18′ – Sarvas, and no dice for Zardes. He’s being beaten off the ball again. Back to Penedo.

19′ – Robbie Rogers is double-teamed. Well done, that Chivas midfield.

20′ – A cross from Donovan is blocked by Avila.

21′ – GOAL! Chivas USA 9 Erick Torres

Torres said that he wanted to be in the MLS All-Star Game. This is how you do it. One of the league’s leading scorers this season adds another to his total.

22′ – Now the Galaxy are forced to chase the game and this is where Omar Gonzalez and Robbie Keane are missed.

23′ – A big of a collision there taken by Robbie Rogers.

24′ – Donny Toia, a former USL Pro regular, with the throw. A stray balloon on the pitch. Samuel with a shot, it’s blocked.

25′ – Throw-in for Rogers, and not the best of restarts.

26′ – Here’s Torres again. But he cannot reach that ball and it will be a Galaxy throw.

27′ – A shot from Donovan hits the post and a header from Zardes is collected by Kennedy.

28′ – Zardes is on a coldstreak. He is offsides on that sequence.

29′ – I think that sequence in the 27th minute may be a sign of things to come; stay tuned on this Live Blog.

30′ – This is some free-flowing football as we enter the half-hour mark. Goal kick, Kennedy, and more balloons enter the pitch.

31′ – Long ball for Samuel missed everything there. Back to Leonardo, who is back to his nasty habit of conceding goals.

32′ – Chivas stretch. Here’s Rosales. Marking Torres has been a bit of a pain for Leonardo. Normally, this is Omar Gonzalez’s job.

33′ – Rogers, with the cross to Zardes, and Zardes loses the ball.

34′ – Penedo with the collection, and Samuel easily loses that duel.

35′ – GOAL! Los Angeles Galaxy 11 Gyasi Zardes

Stefan Ishizaki with the assist on that goal. No oil change, though.

36′ – Here is Mauro Rosales with the throw-in, and now it’s Agustin Pelletieri. A speculative clearance from Rogers.

37′ – Toia now, with the throw. Barrera. The cross. Saves.

38′ – Juninho now. And this is Rogers, again. The Galaxy are stretching the field. And Marcelo Sarvas doesn’t seem like 100% fit yet, as that goes out for a Chivas throw.

39′ – Rogers has been giving up a lot of touches, and that will not help his match rating in the recap here on the Plex.

40′ – Kennedy with the goal kick.  Back come Los Angeles. Zardes, Rogers, and Samuel did not read the cross. It was behind him anyway.

41′ – This is some good passing here from the Galaxy. Toia concedes a throw.

42′ – Another chance goes south for the Galaxy, and Chivas resets. DeLaGarza buys his mates time by conceding a throw.

43′ – Gyasi Zardes has been coming up big for Los Angeles and he wins a throw-in.  That sequence is wasted by LA.

44′ – And Donovan was not going to reach that pass from Ishizaki. Too much pace on that ball.

45′ –  That was not a good cross from Zardes. He had no one to receive that high cross.

45′  + 1′ – And a Chivas player is shaken up in the only minute of stoppage time for this half.

So, we have ourselves a good game for once in this SuperClasico. There’s all to play for here. This Live Blog will get you covered. Leave a comment on the game on our comments section below!

SECOND HALF START: 6:08 P.M. PT/9:08 P.M. ET

46′ – The second half starts.

47′ – Landon Donovan wins a throw-in.  And the Galaxy start off with good possession, but Chivas USA are there to ready the play. This is Barrera. Penedo with the save.  Marcelo Sarvas, marked by Agustin Pelletieri. Dan Gargan, and he should have done better.

48′ – Juninho plays it forward. Gargan again, and Stefan Ishizaki is stuck in traffic.

49′ – Mauro Rosales is slow to get up.

50′ –  Samuel, Juninho, Ishizaki and a corner. Good sequence.

51′ – Samuel did not leave a very good impression on me during warmups and now I can see the payoff, or lack thereof.

52′ – And now these corners are going to pile up for Los Angeles. Ishizaki to take, with the glare. And Dan Kennedy did well enough to collect that, but the touch was poor.

53′ – Torres just got challenged and now he’s slow to get up. He wins a free kick, 40 yards out. Pelletieri will take this…and Rosales wins a corner.

54′  – Penedo with the collection. Donovan was offsides on the transition.

55′ – Dan Gargan makes a meal of that touch. Goal kick, the other Dan, as in Kennedy.

56′ – Gargan plays it back to Penedo after Kennedy plays it forward.

57′ – Robbie Rogers is in a pinch and is forced to play it back. A wasted sequence nonetheless from Samuel.

58′ – I am not a fan of Samuel’s form and he could be one year and done if he doesn’t get his act together.

59′ – Barrera with speed, but he rockets that into the Angel City Brigade section. Leonardo plays it forward.  Both teams in search of the breakthrough.

60′ – One too many whiffs from Gargan as we enter the hour mark. And another Ishizaki miss.

61′ – Gargan and Leonardo team up to deny Barrera.

62′ – Ishizaki should have done a better job with the cross, he was looking for Zardes. He was looking for that free oil change.

63′ – This is a dangerous free kick to concede, from 20 yards out.

64′ – Juninho’s kick is blocked, and the Galaxy play it back. Too long for Sarvas.

65′ – Here comes Torres…and he plays it back.

66′ – Everybody’s playing it back. Everyone’s being cautious and calculated. And Martin Rivero make a meal of that overhead.

67′ – One bad giveaway leads to another.

68′ – Donovan to Rogers…and that will go out for a goal kick.

69′  – Substitution Los Angeles Gaslaxy

IN 16 Rob Friend

OUT 9 Samuel Rosa

Substitution Chivas USA

IN 21 Kristopher Tyrpak

OUT 11 Leandro  Barrera

70′ – 19.756 in attendance today as both teams press for the breakthrough. Robbie Rogers, and Gyasi Zardes concedes another goal kick.

71′ – Martin Rivero with the steal, and this time Leonardo makes the clearance.

72′ – Off Tony Lochhead and into the hands of Kennedy. #Teamwork Back come LA. One of the few mistakes from Landon Donovan today. And Torres gets the “don’t argue.”

73′ – This is the point in the match where the high line is the way to go. And Stefan Ishizaki is injured.

74′ – That’s a tough break for Ishizaki; he was doing well up until he got up gimpy.

75′ – Substitution Chivas USA

IN 12 Marco Delgado

OUT 7 Mauro Rosales

76′ – Ishizaki does get up; hopefully he will see out this match. Offsides, LA. Poor finishing from the Galaxy tonight here at the Hub.

77′ – Chandler Hoffman will come onto the pitch soon. Good dispossession there from DeLaGarza. And another Chivas player is down.

78′ – Substitution Los Angeles Galaxy

IN 30 Chandler Hoffman

OUT 8 Marcelo Sarvas

79′ – Hoffman gets a run out after a series of solid shifts with Galaxy II.

80′ – Back come Chivas, and they lose it , and on the transition, LA blow their opportunity.

81′ – Leonardo with the sweeping clearance. A much better half from Leonardo.

82′ – Substitution Chivas USA

IN 20 Carlos Alvarez

OUT 5 Martin Rivero

83′ – Alvarez has had a history of scoring on teams like the Galaxy. Can he break through late as a super sub? Chivas USA win a corner.

84′ – Pelletieri skies that one. And now this is going to be some wide-open football to finish.

85′ – Substitution Los Angeles Galaxy

IN 6 Baggio Husidic

OUT 24 Stefan Ishizaki

Throw-in, Chivas USA.

86′ – Danger averted for LA and Gargan again fails to receive a pass.

87′  – A cross from Rogers is deflected and Chivas are playing bunkerball to perfection. Kennedy plays it forward.

88′ – Somebody suffered what looks like a concussion for the Galaxy.

89′ – The Galaxy can ill-afford to lose Dan Gargan this late in the game.

90′ – Chandler Hoffman could not find anybody in the box, and that is never a good thing. By this point, Hoffman know that this is a different animal, MLS is. Four minutes.

90′ + 1′ – And another Chivas player is shaken up.  You can’t say this wasn’t a physical match.

90′ + 2′ –  Quickly taken restart by LA, but Chivas are there.

90′ + 3′ – Gargan with the throw, and Chivas USA concede a throw.

90′ + 4′ – Goal kick, Dan Kennedy. And that’s it.
