At the top of the list of things Cardinals fans do not want to read right now, having their ace sent home on a road trip for a MRI certainly has to be at the top. However, that’s just the case for St. Louis hopefuls as Adam Wainwright was sent back to the midwest today for an MRI on his elbow.

The good news, however, is that the MRI did not reveal damage, instead being diagnosed simply as soreness, according to the Cardinals general manager.

"The St. Louis Cardinals evidently survived a scare Wednesday, when an MRI on Adam Wainwright’s pitching elbow revealed that the ace right-hander has no structural damage in his surgically repaired ligament.Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told reporters that Wainwright experienced soreness, similar to “tennis elbow,” after throwing seven shutout innings in Tuesday’s victory over the Tampa Bay Rays."

Wainwright leads the Cardinals starters with a 2.15 ERA, sporting nine wins and 0.93 WHIP, ranking top three in the national league in all three categories. For a Cardinals team that is sitting at 34-32 and already five games behind the division-leading Brewers, losing Wainwright would be a critical loss.

Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to be any long-term issue for Wainwright. While his immediate status is uncertain, soreness is much better than ligament damage itself. Still, Cardinals fans will be sitting on edge until a more official diagnosis is given.
