Rumblings surrounding the status of former Michigan Wolverines big man Mitch McGary have swirled for weeks, but despite missing his original timetable for return, it appears as if McGary will be beginning his pre-draft workouts next week. Nick Baumgardner of MLive.com brings the latest:

More from NBA

"McGary’s agent Mark Bartelstein told MLive on Wednesday that, at the moment, the plan is to have McGary begin working out for select NBA teams at some point next week — and by this weekend, the hope is to have a small number of dates set and ready to go.“Everything’s good, we’re hopefully going to start working out toward the middle or end of next week, we’re trying to schedule some stuff” Bartelstein said. “Everything’s been good, he’s progressing, that’s probably the plan right now.“There’s a lot of interest, no question. But we’re going to do a limited number of workouts, we’re not going to overdo it. It’ll be his first time getting back into contact. We’ll pick out a small group of teams, and I think by the time we get to this weekend we’ll hopefully have a couple workouts lined up for the end of next week.”"

With an athletic, 6-foot-10 frame, Mitch McGary is currently ranked as the 30th overall prospect for ESPN’s Chad Ford, but depending on how he performs in workouts, the versatile big man could skyrocket. Once thought to be a surefire lottery pick, McGary has experienced big-time health issues with his back and a well-publicized marijuana suspension that basically forced him to enter the 2014 Draft.

However, there are few players who can match the size and motor combination that he could present, and if teams are satisfied with his health, Mitch McGary could be an incredible steal at the bottom of the first round.
