The Texas Rangers are serious about stopping their fans from doing the wave. Well, sort of serious. Clearly, they would prefer it if their fans stopped doing the wave, but at the same time, they understand that stopping the wave is pretty much impossible, and if they did make a full and honest attempt to stop the wave, they would just come across looking like complete idiots. They can’t win.

So, the Rangers are sort of trying to split the difference. Tuesday night they posted a message on their stadium scoreboard warning the fans against doing the wave – a tongue-in-cheek message that, despite the humorous tone, nevertheless gets across their point, which is that they hate the wave and want to see it banished from their ball park forever.

This effort will of course do nothing to stop the wave, which is as unstoppable as, well, a wave. Ultimately, there is nothing you can do about the wave. It’s just this primal thing that moves through people. Once a wave starts, it just builds its own momentum. It sucks people in. It takes over people’s minds.

The only way to stop the wave is by fundamentally altering human nature, and who knows how to do that? Not the Texas Rangers. Sorry, but the wave is here to stay, like it or not. Cute message though. Very nice attempt at a humorous, civilized appeal to the fans. Too bad it is futile.
