NBA Rumors: Jameer Nelson wants to stay with Orlando Magic

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson is entering the final year of his contract with the Orlando Magic, leading many to believe that Nelson’s days in Orlando could be numbered.

Nelson could be dealt to a team looking for a reliable veteran option or a team simply looking for an expiring contract. In 2012, Nelson signed a three-year deal the final year of his deal, which is worth $8 million is only partially guaranteed – the Magic can pay Nelson $2 million to become an unrestricted free agent.

According to David Baumann of CBS Orlando, Nelson wants to remain with the Magic.

Nelson was acquired by the Magic from the Denver Nuggets on draft night in 2004. Nelson, who was the National Player of the Year with St. Joseph’s in the prior reason, was the 20th-overall selection in the first round of the draft and has spent his entire career with the Magic.

The Magic view Nelson as an excellent role model and tutor for their young team and keeping him around to mentor their fourth-overall pick, who many expect to be either Australian point guard Dante Exum or former Oklahoma State Cowboys’ point guard Marcus Smart, may not be a bad idea.

Nelson averaged 12.1 points, 7.0 assists and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 39.4% from the field, 34.8% from beyond the arc and 85.7% from the free throw line in 68 games for the Magic last season. In his career, he has averaged 12.6 points, 5.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting 44.2% from the field, 37.4% from three and 81.7% from the free throw line.
