It’s not the promotion Cubs fans were hoping for, but it’s still a step in the right direction. On Wednesday the Cubs announced that slugging outfielder/Paul Bunyan-esque folk hero Kris Bryant has been bumped up a notch from double-A Tennessee to triple-A Iowa.

More from Chicago Cubs

All Bryant did against double-A pitching this year was hit .355 with 22 homers and 58 RBI. For what it’s worth, he also won the Home Run Derby at the double-A All-Star game. Think he’s ready for the next level?

I’d say yes. And the Cubs agree.

The #2 overall pick in the 2013 draft, Bryant’s mammoth minor league home runs have become the stuff of legend, prompting excitement-starved fans to scream for the young man to be brought up to the floundering big league club. But Cubs management keeps insisting that they won’t rush Bryant. Because that’s the plan and they’re sticking to it.

Every time Bryant hits another titanic homer into the seldomest-visited reaches of some podunk minor league ball park, the cry for his promotion to the big stage of Wrigley Field gets that much louder. He may not be in Chicago yet, but this move draws him closer, both geographically and on a deeper spiritual level.

He’s almost home Cubs fans. Just stay patient a little longer. The big man is coming, and he’s bringing his lumber, which I’m told shoots lightning. Or possibly fire.
