At least week’s E3 2014 event in Los Angeles, one of the talking points around Nintendo was the future of device communication between the Wii U and 3DS.

It was announced that player data for Super Smash Bros. would be able to be transferred between the two systems, but that led to people wondering why it hasn’t been done more with the consoles. In speaking with the media during the event last week, various members of Nintendo spoke on the feature.

“With Smash Bros., because the two games have the same gameplay and the same controls, that game in particular is designed where you’ll want to start playing on the 3DS first and build up your characters there, and then transfer that character data over to the Wii U and play with them there,” Nintendo software planning and development general manager Shinya Takahashi said.

Shigeru Miyamoto added that the company has talked about using the feature more in the future, but titles that they are developing just haven’t fit in with the plans for its inclusion.

“I guess it just hasn’t really fit into the titles that we have been making and it’s not that we haven’t thought about it,” he said. ““In fact, with Wii Fit U we created the Fit meter which connects to the Wii U GamePad wirelessly and transfers data. Within those plans we also thought about potentially having some type of functionality with 3DS that would connect to it, but ultimately we didn’t include it.”

The two also teased the feature working with a game involving Mario and Donkey Kong, but no other details were given.

A connection between the 3DS and Wii U would create a new wrinkle to the mix for Nintendo fans. It could potentially give Wii U users another GamePad-like experience by using the 3DS console. It’s a cool idea that hopefully Nintendo takes full advantage of in the future.
