The free agency period in the NBA is about to heat up here as we get close to July 1. With the news on Sunday that Carmelo Anthony will indeed opt out of his deal with the New York Knicks to test the waters, the stage is set for one of the most fun summers we’ve seen in quite some time, and the Dallas Mavericks are reportedly set to make a splash.

More from Dallas Mavericks

It’s no secret that mostly everyone will try to make a run at Anthony when he does officially become available, and according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Mavericks will be one of them as they’ll get the chance to make their open pitch, face-to-face.

However, as Stein also pointed out, they’re not just going to stop with Anthony. No, they are also apparently ready to make a run at another lucrative free agent, Pau Gasol.

Now whether or not they’ll have enough to take on both players remains to be seen, and may also be a bit unlikely, but they’re certainly going to shoot for the stars when the free agency period opens up.

As we saw this past season, this is a team that isn’t all that far away from competing for an NBA title once again, all that’s missing is maybe one or two key pieces to go along with one of the biggest stars in the NBA, Dirk Nowitzki.
