Mike Pouncey will be out for at least three months after undergoing hip surgery on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

More from Miami Dolphins

With Pouncey out for at least the next three months, the Miami Dolphins will begin the 2014 season with five new starters on a revamped offensive line that was the subject of much controversy and criticism last season in the wake of the Richie Incognito bullying scandal that also involved Pouncey as a tormentor of former teammate Jonathan Martin.

Incognito has since been let go and his NFL career appears to be over while Martin was traded for a conditional draft pick to the San Francisco 49ers where he will be reunited with former college head coach Jim Harbaugh who recruited him to Stanford.

The Dolphins drafted former Tennessee right tackle Ja’Wuan James in the first round and fellow rookie Billy Turner is competing for a starting spot at guard so the absence of Pouncey who could miss at leat the first three games of the year and potentially a fourth before the team’s bye week in Week 5.

A return date of October 12th vs. the Green Bay Packers would appear to be the most realistic because the team would not rush him back for the Week 4 game vs. the Oakland Raiders five days past the estimated three-month recovery timeline.

The Dolphins play AFC East rivals New England and Buffalo in the first two weeks of the season so playing without their veteran Pro Bowl center on a revamped offensive line could result in a rough start for the Dolphins as they attempt to get back into the postseason.
