Jim Deshaies used to be a major league pitcher, so it stands to reason that unlike a lot of announcers he would have no fear of a foul ball coming back into the booth looking for him.

More from Boston Red Sox

A pitcher who used to stand on the mound 60 feet, 6 inches away from some of the most fearsome batters in history isn’t going to be intimidated by a ball coming way up into the Fenway Park broadcast perch. Especially not off the bat of Darwin Barney who doesn’t exactly hit laser beams out there.

So, no surprise that when Barney hit a lazy one back into the booth where Deshaies and Cubs broadcast partner Len Kasper were stationed, the grizzled old pitcher made the grab with ease. And he didn’t even need Harry Caray’s net.

Of course Deshaies has to acknowledge the crowd. Because that’s what you do after you snag a foul ball in the booth.

Deshaies still has good hands. And if he could still pitch the Cubs would gladly sign him up. And flip him for prospects ahead of the trade deadline. Because that’s what the Cubs do.
