The last time Chris Bosh was a free agent, he left the Toronto Raptors to team up with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami, a run that took them to four NBA Finals and netted them two championship rings. Free agency this time around got off to a rough start when LeBron James opted out of his contract and their was doubt cast over the “Big Three’s” future together.

Ultimately LeBron James announced his intentions to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chris Bosh followed by working towards re-signing with the Miami Heat. As soon as the news broke, the Houston Rockets stepped up their pursuit of Bosh  and began working quickly on on a deal.

Initially, Bosh was hopeful that LeBron James would stay with the Heat and the Big Three would remain intact, but with James leaving Bosh decided to look for greener pastures.

From Chris Broussard of ESPN:

"While Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were committed to returning to the Heat, LeBron James was unsure of what he would do, the sources said."

With James bolting though, the Heat decided to allocate those funds to Bosh instead. Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski initially reported that the Heat were offering Bosh a five-year max deal, and not many moments later announced that the Heat and Bosh were close to finalizing that deal.
