Early Access, the practice of game developers putting out their game for play early on in development, has been a popular way for PC game developers to get feedback from those who will spend the most time with the game.

Now, with the success of the practice on PC, console developers are even considering getting in on the action. One company in particular, Sony, has admitted that the PlayStation team has talked about having early access internally.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Sony vice president of publisher and developer relations Adam Boyes spoke about the possibility of it happening in the future.

“Honestly, we’re working through that right now. We’re figuring out what’s okay,” Boyes said.. “We obviously have our tech requirement checklist that people have to adhere to. So we’re internally discussing, what does that list look like this? What are the caveats? Stuff like this.

“So it’s still a project that a lot of minds are considering. No details yet, but it’s something on the top of my mind every day.”

Mike’s Musings: I hope this happens much sooner than later. Early Access allows developers and publishers to get straight feedback to help improve the game. It makes the consumer actually feel like a key part of the development process, which could lead to increased sales. As far as consoles this would come to, I’d expect to only see it on PlayStation 4. I don’t think the PlayStation 3 will be relevant by the time Early Access is adopted.
