Heroes reboot to focus on new characters

It’s been four years since NBC’s Heroes bowed out of network television in 2010. Fans were not thrilled but season two left a lot to be desired and while the show picked up again for seasons three and four, the network lost too many viewers to continue the series.

NBC has a habit of cutting shows far too early and Heroes was one of those that needed some retooling and a little more direction which is what they will get now with the reboot of series. According to the shows creator, Tim Kring, the planned 13 episode mini-series will feature more on new characters. Heroes: Reborn is expecting a few of it’s original cast to return, including Noah Bennett who played Jack Coleman. Bennett has already agreed to return.

Others however have not. Ali Larter will not return do to other commitments and Zachary Quinto isn’t sure if he will have the time given his commitments as well, like playing Spock in the third Star Trek film. Quinto has left the door open, more like slightly ajar.

Kring spoke with Entertainment Weekly about Heroes: Reborn and was asked specifically about fans desires to not bring back original characters and to start over with new characters.

"The vast, vast majority are brand new characters, brand new ideas. [Bringing back previous characters is] really only to give a sense of continuity and a tether to the original world. If it was all completely brand new, we’d miss certain elements that need to be there to give you that bridge to cross to something new. I approached Coleman because he was a character who had a spine through the series that allowed you to meet new characters. So he’s a character I wanted to make sure had a little part at the beginning of this thing."

With Heroes making it’s way back to television, I now have a sense of renewed hope that NBC will feel the need to bring back “Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip”. Sadly I know that will not be the case.
