Speaking with Esquire magazine and posted on LiveforFilms.com, Kate Mara who will play Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, said that the films director told the cast there was no need to bone up on the comic book history of the superheroes.

"“I was going to (read the comic book) for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions.”"

The film is being directed by Josh Trank and the fact he is taking a totally different approach to the Fantastic Four is actually quite refreshing. More often than not film fail when they try too hard to become a living version of the comic series they are made from. Sure there are exceptions and many of them. The entire Marvel Universe is based off comic books and in fact almost every superhero movie is based off a comic book but there is a direction that each film takes to make it a winning product.

In the case of the original Fantastic Four, we found ourselves watching the pages of the comic version play out on screen. Instead of simple back stories or adversaries we were treated to an almost page by page event. That doesn’t normally work.

The choice of Trank to alter the story completely is a risky one as he will inevitably alienate the true fans of the comic series. That being said, a fresh visual take on familiar characters could revive the franchise and give the series plausible sequels. The question remaining is what direction will he take and what villains will they fight? Will those be new as well or will we see a different incarnation of Dr. Doom?
