The amazing year for Seattle Seahawks’ defensive back Richard Sherman continued on Wednesday night as, in the first award of the night at the 2014 ESPY Awards, he was given the award for Breakthrough Athlete of the Year.

More from NFL

Since nearly going undrafted, Sherman has more than made his presence felt in the NFL, and it was never felt more than it was last season and he was the unquestioned leader of the “Legion of Boom” defense, that was the catalyst for the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl championship. He and his teammates put their talents on full display with their dismantling of the Denver Broncos.

Last season, Sherman accounted for 48 total tackles and a career-high eight interceptions. He has gone from someone that was a virtual unknown coming out of Stanford, to the man that some now consider the best cornerback in the entire NFL.

Not only has he now won a Super Bowl trophy and this award tonight this year, he was also named to the cover of the coveted Madden 15 video game, although some may consider that more of a curse than a blessing.

Still, it has been one of the most successful years that any athlete has had in quite some time, and like him or not, you can’t deny that Sherman has worked hard for all of it as he broke through the glass ceiling.
