Back in January, 5-Star St. Bonaventure High School (Ventura, California) quarterback Ricky Town gave his pledge to the Trojans. Town is considered the second-best pro style quarterback, trailing only St. John Bosco High School (Bellflower, California) quarterback Josh Rosen, who is committed to the rival UCLA Bruins.
Usually when a 5-Star prospects, especially quarterbacks, commit early in the process, they do it to help bolster their class, recruiting other talent prospects to play with them. However, it often scares off other prospects.
That is certainly not the case with 3-Star dual-threat quarterback/outside linebacker Sam Darnold, who committed to the Trojans on Friday.
In fact, according to Steve Wiltfong of 24/7 Sports, Darnold believes he can beat Town out.
"I can read between the lines. When four-star quarterback Sam Darnold committed to in-state USC on Friday, over Duke, Oregon, Northwestern and Utah, he also said without saying that he thinks he’s better than and can beat out long-time Trojans commit in five-star Ricky Town.Easy to like that confidence."
The 6’4, 208-pound Darnold is from San Clemente, California and attends San Clemente High School. He is ranked as the country’s ninth-best dual-threat quarterback prospect, the 41st-best overall prospect in the state of California and the 330th-best overall prospect in the class of 2015, according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings.
Although Darnold has been a Trojans’ fan, many thought he would wind up signing with the Duke Blue Devils, mostly because of Town. He also held offers from the Oregon Ducks and Northwestern Wildcats, among others.
